Make a Paper Soma-Style Cube Set

Create seven three-dimensional polycube pieces from card modules and combine them into a 3 × 3 × 3 cube.

Materials

  • 27 small card cube nets or 27 interlocking paper cubes
  • Glue or low-tack tape
  • Seven labels or colours
  • Squared paper for recording solutions

Build steps

  1. Make twenty-seven equal unit cubes.
  2. Join them into seven non-convex polycube pieces: one piece of three cubes and six pieces of four cubes.
  3. Label each piece with a letter.
  4. Attempt to combine all pieces into a 3 × 3 × 3 cube.
  5. Record a successful solution layer by layer using a 3 × 3 grid for each layer.

Test and improve

  • Are all unit cubes the same size?
  • Are the seven pieces structurally strong but still separate?
  • Can the recorded layer diagrams reproduce the solution?

Record your design

Photograph the finished puzzle, record dimensions and materials, note every change made after testing and write a short set of user instructions.
