Make a Cardboard Sliding Puzzle

Build a simple 3 × 3 sliding-tile puzzle and improve its movement through measurement and user testing.

Materials

  • Two sheets of thick card
  • Nine square tile blanks, using eight in the puzzle
  • Ruler, pencil, glue and supervised cutting tools
  • Markers or printed tile artwork

Build steps

  1. Cut a base and four narrow frame strips.
  2. Make eight equal tiles. Their total row width should be slightly smaller than the internal frame width.
  3. Glue the frame around the base and allow it to dry under a flat weight.
  4. Number or decorate the eight tiles and place them in the frame with one empty space.
  5. Test movement and trim rough edges gradually rather than increasing the gap too far.

Test and improve

  • Can every tile slide without lifting?
  • Is the empty space large enough for movement but too small for accidental overlap?
  • Does the frame remain square after repeated use?

Record your design

Photograph the finished puzzle, record dimensions and materials, note every change made after testing and write a short set of user instructions.
