Materials
- Two sheets of thick card
- Nine square tile blanks, using eight in the puzzle
- Ruler, pencil, glue and supervised cutting tools
- Markers or printed tile artwork
Build steps
- Cut a base and four narrow frame strips.
- Make eight equal tiles. Their total row width should be slightly smaller than the internal frame width.
- Glue the frame around the base and allow it to dry under a flat weight.
- Number or decorate the eight tiles and place them in the frame with one empty space.
- Test movement and trim rough edges gradually rather than increasing the gap too far.
Test and improve
- Can every tile slide without lifting?
- Is the empty space large enough for movement but too small for accidental overlap?
- Does the frame remain square after repeated use?
Record your design
Photograph the finished puzzle, record dimensions and materials, note every change made after testing and write a short set of user instructions.
