Wooden puzzle assembly guide

A general method for rebuilding an unknown wooden puzzle when the box, name or instructions have been lost.

Start with identification, not force

Most failed wooden-puzzle assemblies begin with the wrong solution. Two puzzles can have the same piece count and finished shape but different notch patterns. Before assembling anything, count the separate pieces, photograph both sides, group matching cuts and look for the one piece that moves or locks differently.

A repeatable assembly method

  1. Count and sort. Separate identical pieces, mirrored pieces and unusual locking pieces.
  2. Match the finished form. A ball, cube, star, cross and barrel can all use interlocking construction but need different assembly sequences.
  3. Find the key piece. In many burr-style puzzles one piece has a different notch or remains slightly mobile when the core is nearly complete.
  4. Build loosely. Keep the centre relaxed until the final locking piece is ready. Forcing a tight partial assembly usually means a piece is reversed.
  5. Use photographs as geometry. Seam direction and notch position are more reliable than a retailer name.

Common assembly searches

If you searched for a 12 piece burr puzzle assembly or 24 piece burr puzzle assembly, compare the archive first: there is no universal sequence for every burr with the same piece count. Use the burr puzzle solution hub to narrow the design.

Still cannot identify it?

Use the Puzzle Finder, private Photo Identifier or description matcher. Each tool is designed to narrow the archive before you try a solution.

Looking for another wooden assembly puzzle?

Retailer stock changes, so this search does not claim a specific current model is identical to an archived puzzle.
