How to Photograph a Puzzle for Identification

A single attractive photograph may be enough to display a puzzle, but identification needs a more systematic visual record.

Prepare the scene

Use indirect daylight or two diffused lamps, a plain contrasting background and a stable camera position. Avoid reflections, patterned surfaces and digital filters.

Include scale

Place a ruler or standard scale beside the object without covering it. Photograph dimensions rather than estimating them from perspective.

Capture a standard sequence

  1. Front, back, left, right, top and base.
  2. Any label, logo, stamp or product code.
  3. Close views of notches, slots, cords, rings and unusual joints.
  4. All loose pieces arranged without overlap.
  5. Packaging and instructions.

Preserve orientation

When documenting a staged disassembly, keep the camera and puzzle orientation fixed. Number the stages and avoid rotating the object between photographs unless the caption states the change.

Name the files clearly

Use a stable ID followed by view and sequence, for example CP-0042-front.jpg and CP-0042-step-03.jpg.
